Welcome!

President of the BSG - Professor Judith Phillips
On behalf of the BSG I have great pleasure in welcoming you to our 2010 annual conference. We are delighted that the conference is being held at Brunel University and hosted by the Brunel Institute for Ageing Studies. The theme - Identities, care and everyday life - provides a framework for interdisciplinary and international exchange on issues of ageing research, policy and practice. The programme covers a wide range of topics and provides the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with leading experts in the gerontology field. Please join us at the conference and enjoy all the aspects that the conference has to present. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

Vice-Chancellor – Professor Chris Jenks
As a research intensive university, Brunel is delighted to be able to welcome the annual scientific meeting of the British Society of Gerontology. With the ageing of the UK population, and growing concerns about the impact of the current economic situation and its impact on retired people, it is right and timely that Brunel should host such an important event. We have a wonderful campus, wonderful conference facilities and know you will have a wonderful time during the conference.

Professor Jenks
Professor Rodgers

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research – Professor Geoff Rodgers
I look forward to welcoming you to Brunel University in 2010.  The BSG conference will further raise the importance and profile of ageing research nationally and internationally. Interdisciplinary research on ageing is one of the university’s key research themes.  The Brunel Institute for Ageing Studies is one of only four ‘Collaborative Research Networks’ recently created to develop interdisciplinary research at the University.  In a very short time BIAS has demonstrated how a core of very determined researchers can inspire others to enter the field of ageing research.

Head of the School of Health Sciences and Social Care – Prof Lorraine De Souza
As the host School for the BSG conference we wish to extend a very warm welcome.  One of the School’s focuses is on aging research. This ranges from cell biology to legal and ethical issues in an ageing society. Hosting the BSG conference is the culmination of our expanding ageing research programme and some recent key, and strategic, appointments aimed at strengthening gerontological research at Brunel.  The School of Health Sciences and Social Care is keen to make you feel welcome and we will do everything we can to make your visit to the University and to our School enjoyable and stimulating.

Professor De Souza
Professor Gilhooly

Executive Director, Brunel Institute for Ageing Studies – Professor Mary Gilhooly
It is with enormous pleasure that the Brunel Institute for Ageing Studies invites and welcomes you to the annual conference of the British Society of Gerontology.  The Board of Directors, the Deputy Executive Director, Dr Ian Kill, and I are committed to ensuring that you not only have a good time, but leave the conference inspired to work hard to develop gerontology both within the UK and internationally.  This is a truly a good time to be a gerontologist and with growing life expectancy, a good time to be growing old.
